Alaska Department of Fish and Game
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) through the Division of Wildlife Conservation supports the Working Group as a public stakeholder process to bring information and recommendations for management for the Western Arctic caribou herd to fulfill the department’s mission:
“To protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game, and aquatic plant resources of the state, and manage their use and development in the best interest of the economy and the well-being of the people of the state, consistent with the sustained yield principle.”
The department provides administrative and financial support for regular meetings, detailed information about the herd from caribou biologists, assistance with educational outreach and newsletter production, and responses to specific projects or requests from the WG to facilitate communication and understanding of important wildlife management issues affecting the herd and its users. Through this support, the WG builds partnerships among diverse users and strives to bring consensus-based decisions for biologically and socially complex issues, thereby helping to fulfill Division’s goal to “conserve and enhance Alaska’s wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits.”
